History

Nakagawa Station opened on 3 November 1903 on the Ōu Main Line in the city of Nanyō, Yamagata Prefecture, 64.4 rail kilometres from the line's southern terminus at Fukushima. Freight services were withdrawn in October 1969 and parcel handling ended in February 1975, when the station also became unstaffed. The station building was rebuilt on 1 April 1986 and the station passed to JR East at privatisation a year later, on 1 April 1987. It has two opposed side platforms linked by a pedestrian overpass, though only one is in regular use.
