History

Kaji Station opened on 1 June 1914 with the inaugural section of the Murakami Line between Shibata and Nakajō, serving what was then the village of Kaji in northern Niigata. The station became a Uetsu Line stop in July 1924 and a Uetsu Main Line stop on 20 November 1925 with the opening of the Akadani branch. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1969; luggage handling then ceased on 1 September 1972, after which the station was destaffed. The station passed to JR East at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and the simplified-agency arrangement that followed destaffing was dissolved on 31 October 2004. Suica is not accepted here.

Notes

The old Kaji-gawa temporary halt once operated nearby during cherry-blossom season; the river south of the station remains a hanami spot.
