History
Toyosaka Station opened on 1952-12-23 with the first section of the Hakushin Line between Shibata and the present site. Its original name, Kuzutsuka, came from the local municipality. The line was completed end-to-end on 1956-04-15, and the station was renamed to its present form on 1976-04-01. It passed to JR East at the 1987-04-01 privatisation. From the timetable revision of 1997-03-22, selected Inaho limited-express trains began stopping here. A temporary building opened on 2004-12-04 to support the rebuild, with automatic ticket gates installed at the same time, and the new elevated station building entered service on 2006-03-25, when a north entrance was added. The station has been operated by JR Niigata Business under contract since 2018-07-01.

Notes
The internal free passage is open to cyclists, and houses a convenience store run by a Niigata-city third-sector firm; outside the winter months, the same outlet hands out free rental bicycles.
