History
Sekine Station opened on 1899-05-15 with the through-opening of the Ōu Southern Line between Fukushima and Yonezawa, today operated as part of the Ōu Main Line and branded the Yamagata Line on this section. The station, in the city of Yonezawa in Yamagata Prefecture, was destaffed on 1984-12-01, briefly placed under simplified consignment from August 1985, then returned to unstaffed operation in August 1987 when no successor consignee was found. It joined JR East at the breakup of Japanese National Railways on 1987-04-01. The station has two opposed side platforms connected by a level crossing and is the point at which the line transitions from single to double track.

Notes
Sekine is the singling point on the Yamagata Line: trains heading south toward Yonezawa run over single track, while those heading north toward Ōsawa run over double track.
