History
Kamiyama Station traces its origin to a signal stop opened on 1944-09-28 during the Pacific War. It was promoted to a full station on 1955-01-20 in what is today the city of Agano in Niigata Prefecture, on the Uetsu Main Line. Parcel handling ended on 1972-09-01, at which point the station was destaffed. It passed to JR East at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1987-04-01, and accepted Suica from 2008-03-15. The station originally had two opposed side platforms, but the passing loop was lifted in the mid-1990s and only one side platform remains in service for a single bi-directional track.

Notes
Shortly after promotion to a full station, a sudden gust of wind in the yard on 1970-02-05 overturned the brakevan of a freight train, injuring the two trainmen riding inside.
