History

Uchino-Nishigaoka Station opened on 2005-03-01 on the Echigo Line in Nishi-ku, Niigata, 68.7 kilometres from the line's terminus at Kashiwazaki, as part of the Palette Town Nishi-Niigata residential development. Local residents had long sought a station here, and in 2000-05-17 the local land-readjustment association formally requested one of JR East's Niigata Branch. An agreement signed on 2004-02-06 had the association fund the station building and forecourt. The name "Uchino-Nishigaoka" was chosen by public competition on 2004-04-16, replacing the working name "Nishi-Kōkō-mae" ("West High School Front"). The station accepted Suica from 2006-01-21.

Notes

Although the surrounding hillside-style residential area takes its name from the local sand-dune highland, the station and the new housing immediately around it sit on reclaimed paddy land only one or two metres above sea level.
