History

Suibara Station opened on 1912-09-02 with the inauguration of the Shin'etsu Line branch between Niitsu and Shibata, and serves as the principal station of the city of Agano in Niigata Prefecture. The branch was renamed the Murakami Line in 1914, absorbed into the Uetsu Line in 1924, and renamed the Uetsu Main Line in 1925. The station building was rebuilt on 1966-01-11. Wagonload freight handling ended on 1984-01-20 and parcel handling on 1985-03-14. The station passed to JR East with the JNR breakup on 1987-04-01. A Midori no Madoguchi staffed ticket office opened on 1990-12-01, ran for over thirty years, and closed on 2023-02-28. The station was destaffed throughout the day on 2024-03-16.

On the inbound side of the platform a stuffed swan stands on display — a nod to the swans that winter at Lake Hyōko a short distance from the station and have become a local emblem.
