History

Toyomi Station opened on 1 November 1914 when the Railway Agency's Iwakoshi Line was extended between Nozawa and Tsugawa, completing the route now known as the Banetsu West Line. The station originally had an island platform with two tracks, but the upbound line was later removed, leaving the embankment-mounted single side platform in use today. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1980, the station was put under contract management in April 1981, and on 28 February 1983 the passing siding was removed, parcel service ended, and staff were withdrawn. Control passed to JR East at the JNR breakup on 1 April 1987.

Notes

Until three Agano River bridges were built between the late 1970s and late 1980s, road access to Toyomi was so poor that the railway was the village's effective lifeline to the outside world.
