History

Kitakata Station opened on 20 January 1904 as the terminus of the Iwakoshi Railway's extension from Wakamatsu; the line was nationalised in November 1906, and was extended westward to Yamato Station on 15 December 1910. From 18 August 1938 the station was the junction for the Nicchū Line to Nesshio, which was abolished on 1 April 1984. Freight handling ended on 21 October 1986, and JR East took over at the JNR breakup on 1 April 1987. The exterior was renovated in a namako-kabe (sea-cucumber-wall) style on 2 July 2005, and Suica acceptance toward Aizu-Wakamatsu began on 1 April 2014. Until 17 May 2024 the station marked the western end of the Banetsu West Line's AC electrification.
