History

Ishiji Station opened on 11 November 1912 on what is now the Echigo Line in the city of Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture. The single-platform stop sits 18.7 kilometers from the line terminus at Kashiwazaki Station. When Japanese National Railways was privatized on 1 April 1987, control passed to the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). The station is unattended today, and Suica IC cards cannot be used there. Originally built with passing-loop facilities, it has been reduced to a single bi-directional track. The small wooden building dates from the early 1990s, when staffing ended and a more modest shelter replaced the older structure.

Notes

For the station's 111th anniversary in 2023, students from the Niigata Institute of Technology and a local elementary school collaborated on a renovation of the building.
