History

Kanameta Station opened on 1 January 1950 on the Ban'etsu East Line in the city of Tamura, Fukushima Prefecture. The station sits 69.5 kilometers from the line's official starting point at Iwaki, with a single island platform connected to the station building by a level crossing. It was absorbed into the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) network on 1 April 1987 with the privatization of the Japanese National Railways. The station became fully automated on 11 March 1989, and Suica IC card service was added on 3 March 2009. It is unstaffed today and serves a sparsely populated rural area near Kanameta Onsen and National Route 288.
