History
Ashinomaki-Onsen Station opened on 1 November 1927 as Kamimiyori Station (上三寄駅) on the line then operated by Japanese Government Railways. The station was transferred to the third-sector Aizu Railway on 16 July 1987, and is now served by the Aizu Railway Aizu Line, 10.5 km from the line's starting point at Nishi-Wakamatsu.

Notes
The station is famous for its cat stationmasters, modelled after Tama of Kishi Station. Bus (ばす), named after the Catbus from My Neighbor Totoro, was an honorary stationmaster from April 2008 until her retirement in December 2015 (she remained at the station until her death on 22 April 2016). Love (らぶ) succeeded her, joined later by his younger brother Peach (ぴーち) as rail manager and his younger sister Sakura (さくら), who became honorary stationmaster on 5 November 2023.
