History

Kanmata Station opened on 21 March 1915 as a general station on the state-operated railway in what is now the city of Tamura, Fukushima Prefecture, and is served by the Ban'etsu East Line. From 1918 onward, a private siding extended from the station to a nearby cement works, used principally for limestone traffic and remaining in operation until freight handling was withdrawn entirely in 1981. Parcel handling ended in 1984. Following the privatisation of the Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station was absorbed into the East Japan Railway Company network, then destaffed and put under simple agency management in 1989. The present building dates from March 1991, and full unstaffing took effect on 30 March 2024.
