History

Kawamae Station opened on 10 October 1917 on what is now the Ban'etsu East Line, 26.3 km from the line's origin at Iwaki. Freight services ended on 1 September 1972 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984. The station joined the JR East network with the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and was unstaffed in March 1989 when the line moved to centralised traffic control. Management transferred to Kōriyama Station in April 2016, and the long-standing station building was reconstructed in 2017. Eki-Net Q-ticket service was introduced on 1 October 2024.

Notes

An episode of the long-running TV detective series Sasurai Keiji Ryojō-hen was filmed at the station, using the remote forested setting along the Natsui River as a backdrop.
