Shinza Station opened on 22 March 1997, the day the Hokuhoku Line itself opened across Niigata. Operated by the third-sector Hokuetsu Express, the station serves the city of Tōkamachi and lies 14.4 kilometers from the line's starting point at Muikamachi.
