History

Misashima Station opened on 22 March 1997 with the full opening of the Hokuetsu Express Hokuhoku Line between Muikamachi and Saigata, and lies 12.2 kilometers from the Muikamachi end of the line. The station building sits at ground level in Tōkamachi, Niigata, but its single side platform is buried 10.1 meters below inside the Akakura tunnel, making it the line's only underground stop. From 14 March 2015 the line lost the Hakutaka limited expresses with the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to Kanazawa, and on 18 March 2023 the timetable revision retired the rapid services that still passed Misashima, so no scheduled through trains transit the station today.

Notes

Because high-speed train passes generated dangerous wind pressure inside the tunnel, the platform is sealed behind two interlocked steel doors that never open simultaneously, and alighting passengers must clear the platform within two minutes before a camera-monitored PA prompts them out.
