History

Takada Station opened on 15 August 1886 as a station of the government railway in what was then the Takada castle town; today the station serves the southern centre of Jōetsu City. After several rebuildings (1952, 1992) the most recent JR-era east-side renovation, including a gangi-style covered pedestrian plaza, was completed in stages from 1999 onward. From 14 March 2015, with the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension from Nagano to Kanazawa, the parallel JR East Shin'etsu Main Line was transferred to the third-sector Echigo Tokimeki Railway; the automatic faregates that had been in service since 1 December 2005 were removed the previous day.

Notes

Two imperial special trains have begun their journeys at Takada — one carrying the Shōwa Emperor in 1947 to Ueda, and another carrying the Shōwa Emperor and Empress Kōjun to Taguchi for the 19th National Sports Festival in 1964.
