History
Akai Station opened on July 10, 1915 on what is now the Ban'etsu East Line in present-day Iwaki, Fukushima. Freight handling ended in October 1972 and parcels in February 1984. On 14 March 1985 the station was destaffed and reduced to a single track, with the building-side line removed. The 1987 JNR privatization brought the station under JR East, and in 2016 management transferred to Kōriyama. The wooden station building, which preserved traces of the staffed era, was rebuilt between October 2017 and January 2018. The station is 4.8 rail kilometers from Iwaki and consists of a single side platform serving one bi-directional track.
