History

Echigo-Mizusawa Station opened on 1 September 1929 on the Iiyama Line in what is now Tōkamachi, Niigata. It became part of Japanese National Railways' Iiyama Line on 1 June 1944 when the line was nationalised. Freight handling ceased in 1963 and the station became unstaffed in 1970. Upon the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987 it passed to JR East. A new station building was completed in 1998, and during the 2015 Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale the platform area was reimagined as a public-art space themed around Taiwanese illustrator Jimmy Liao's picture book Kiss & Goodbye.

Notes

During the 2015 Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, the small unmanned station served as the setting for a permanent public artwork themed on Taiwanese illustrator Jimmy Liao's Kiss & Goodbye.
