History
Echigo-Tazawa Station opened on 6 November 1927 as a stop on the Iiyama Line in what is now Tōkamachi, Niigata. The line was nationalised during the Second World War, and the station passed to Japanese National Railways. With the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987 it came under the control of JR East. A new station building was completed in 2001, replacing earlier wooden structures. Today it remains an unstaffed single-platform halt serving the surrounding rural community, near the Shinano River and several local thermal-spring resorts further up National Route 117.
