History
Echigo-Tanaka Station opened on 1 August 1927 as part of the privately-owned Iiyama Railway in Tsunan, Niigata, on what is now the JR East Iiyama Line. Freight handling ceased on 1 February 1963 and the station became a contracted operation in April 1965; baggage was dropped and the station went unstaffed on 21 December 1970, before reverting to a simple commission arrangement in September 1971. With the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987, the station passed to JR East, and the building was rebuilt in 1998. Today it serves a single side platform along the line between Ashidaki and Tsunan.
