History
Kawaji-Onsen Station opened on 9 October 1986 with the Aizu Kinugawa Line of the third-sector Yagan Railway, in what is now the city of Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture. The station has a single elevated island platform serving two tracks, with the station building beneath, and is located 4.8 rail kilometres from the line's southern terminus at Shin-Fujiwara. Despite the station's name, the Kawaji hot-spring resort is best reached from the neighbouring Kawaji-Yumoto Station; from here it is about a 20-minute walk along National Route 121. Since 21 April 2020 the temporary ticket office in the building has been unstaffed indefinitely.

Notes
Although the station carries the Kawaji-Onsen name, the resort itself is closer to the neighbouring Kawaji-Yumoto Station; from here it is about a twenty-minute walk along National Route 121.
