History
Ryūōkyō Station opened on 9 October 1986 on the Yagan Railway Aizu Kinugawa Line, a third-sector line through the mountainous border country of Tochigi and Fukushima. The station was built primarily to give walkers access to the nearby Ryūōkyō Gorge along the Kinugawa River, and its single side platform sits partly inside the Dai-ichi Inohara tunnel. A temporary ticket booth at the entrance is staffed during daylight hours. The annual passenger total for fiscal 2016 was 24,109, equivalent to a daily average of 66 boardings.

Notes
Half of Ryūōkyō's platform is inside the Dai-ichi Inohara tunnel, so passengers stepping off a train walk out of tunnel gloom into daylight before reaching the ticket gate.
