History

Shimonomiya Station opened on 16 April 1930 on the Suigun Line, a route operated by the Japanese Government Railways that links Mito with Kōriyama through the inland valleys of northern Ibaraki and southern Fukushima. The single side platform sits at kilometre 62.0 from Mito, in the town of Daigo, and has handled traffic in both directions throughout its history. The station was unstaffed from an early date and remains so. With the breakup of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, ownership passed to East Japan Railway Company, which has operated the station ever since. Connecting Ibaraki Kōtsū buses serve nearby destinations such as Hitachi-Daigo Station.
