History
Sansai Station opened on 8 January 1958 on what was then JNR's Shinetsu Main Line. With JNR's privatisation on 1 April 1987, the station came under JR East. On 14 March 2015, with the extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Nagano to Kanazawa, parallel local sections of the Shinetsu Main Line and Hokuriku Main Line were transferred to third-sector operators, and Sansai passed to the Shinano Railway as a stop on its new Kita-Shinano Line. The station sits 6.8 kilometres from the line's starting point at Nagano, with two opposed side platforms connected by both a level crossing and an underground passage. Some Iiyama Line trains pass through Toyono to terminate at Nagano, stopping at Sansai en route.
