History

Gondō Station opened on 28 June 1926 as the terminus of the Nagano Electric Railway (then Nagano Denki Tetsudō) Suzaka–Gondō section. On 30 September 1926 the predecessor Kawahigashi Railway absorbed the Nagano Denki Tetsudō to form today's Nagano Electric Railway. The 24 June 1928 opening of the Gondō–Nagano section made it a through stop. Freight handling ended in 1970 and parcels in 1974. The station became underground on 1 March 1981 when the Nagano–Zenkōji-shita segment was placed in cut-and-cover tunnels, leaving the former at-grade station site to be redeveloped as a department-store complex above the new underground concourse.

Notes

The Mansard-roofed surface station building once had its second floor commandeered by U.S. occupation forces in the immediate postwar period and used as a dance hall.
