History

Ashio Station opened on 31 December 1912 as a station of the Ashio Railway in what is now the city of Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, serving the Ashio Copper Mine. The station today is operated by the third-sector Watarase Keikoku Railway and has two opposed side platforms connected to the station building by a level crossing. In 2009, many of its structures—including the station building, both platforms, the baggage and dangerous-goods sheds, and the freight depot with its freight platform—received protection from the national government as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties.
