History

Morimoto Station opened on 1 November 1911 on the Japanese Government Railway Hokuriku Main Line between Kanazawa and Tsubata as a general (passenger and freight) station. Freight handling ended on 1 May 1977 and parcels on 14 March 1985. JNR's 1 April 1987 privatisation transferred it to JR West. Track rearrangement tied to the Hokuriku Shinkansen reduced the quadruple section between Morimoto and Kanazawa to a double track on 21 October 2002, and an overhead station building opened on 8 December 2002. The 14 March 2015 Hokuriku Shinkansen Kanazawa extension transferred local service to IR Ishikawa Railway. Morimoto became unstaffed all day on 16 March 2024 after the staffed-ticket office closed the previous day.
