History

Kanuma Station opened on 1 June 1890 on what is today JR East's Nikko Line, in the city of Kanuma in Tochigi Prefecture. The station ended freight handling in February 1984 and parcel handling in March 1985, then passed from the Japanese National Railways to East Japan Railway Company on 1 April 1987. The Tokyo metropolitan-suburb Suica zone was extended to cover Kanuma on 15 March 2008. The Midori-no-Madoguchi staffed ticket office closed on 28 February 2014, and a rebuilt station building entered service shortly afterward on 14 March 2014.

Notes

A spur once branched from Kanuma to carry Oya tuff stone from quarries north of Utsunomiya — a separate operation from Tobu Railway's later Oya Line.
