History

Tsuruta Station opened on 2 September 1902 on the Nikkō Line in what is now Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, 4.8 km from the line's starting point at Utsunomiya. Its opening replaced an earlier stop a little to the west, Togami Station (砥上駅), which closed the same day. Operated by JR East since the 1 April 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways, the staffed station has a single island platform serving two tracks, connected to the station building by a footbridge; a new station building was completed in March 2014.
