History
Kanashima Station opened on 5 August 1959 on the Agatsuma Line, which it joined as an intermediate stop 5.5 kilometres from the line's eastern terminus at Shibukawa. The station was absorbed into the JR East network with the 1 April 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways. It consists of two side platforms linked by a footbridge and has been unstaffed throughout much of its later operation.
