History

Matto Station opened on 1 April 1898 when the government's Hokuriku Line was extended from Komatsu to Kanazawa, serving what is today Hakusan, Ishikawa Prefecture. The Matsukin tram line connected here from 1916 to 1955. The present concrete depot of 1963 was funded largely by local subscription. After the 1987 JNR privatisation the station served JR West and JR Freight, with a Midori-no-Madoguchi opening the previous year. A bridge-over-track rebuild for the approaching Hokuriku Shinkansen viaduct entered service on 8 August 2011. On 16 March 2024 the station passed to IR Ishikawa Railway with the Shinkansen's extension to Tsuruga.

Notes

Anko-rolled rice cakes from the local Enpachi confectionery were once sold on the platform by hand vendors and remain a staple at Matto and nearby Hokuriku stations.
