History
Kawai Station opened on 7 September 1899 as a stop on the privately owned Ōta Railway. The Ōta Railway merged into the Mito Railway on 21 October 1901, and the combined company was nationalised on 1 December 1927, placing Kawai on the national network. Freight handling ended in February 1960 and parcel service in October 1970, at which point staffing was withdrawn. A short period as a simply-commissioned outlet via a local shop ended in August 1992. The station has been part of JR East's Hitachi-Ōta Branch of the Suigun Line since the 1 April 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways, and consists of a single side platform with no station building.
