History
Nanai Station opened on 11 July 1913 as a terminus on the Japanese Government Railway, in what is today Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture. It became an intermediate stop on 15 December 1920 when the line was extended 13.5 km to Motegi. Carload freight handling ended on 21 April 1975 and staffing was withdrawn the same day. The station passed to JR East at the 1987 privatisation and to Mooka Railway on 11 April 1988, when the third-sector operator took over the Mooka Line. The original station building was destroyed by arson in March 2000 and the present structure was completed later that year.
