History

Iwajuku Station opened on 20 November 1889 on the Ryōmō Railway, initially named Ōma Station after a better-known nearby town rather than the village where it actually stood. The line was absorbed by Nippon Railway in 1897 and nationalised in 1906. After Ashio Railway opened its own Ōmamachi Station nearby, the JGR depot was renamed Iwajuku on 1 May 1911. The present wooden station building dates from March 1936. The station passed to JR East at JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987, and Suica acceptance began on 18 November 2001.
