History

Freight handling ended in February 1963, the station was operationally entrusted in July 1979, parcel handling ceased in February 1984, and it was destaffed under a simple commission arrangement the following month. After JNR privatisation in April 1987 it served JR East, then transferred to the third-sector Shinano Railway on 1 October 1997 with the Hokuriku Shinkansen Takasaki–Nagano opening. The station was fully destaffed in April 2022 and Suica service began on 14 March 2026.

Notes

For roughly two decades the ticket window was contracted to a local taxi company — "Shigeno Matsuba Taxi" — an arrangement that ran from April 2002 until the station was fully destaffed in April 2022.
