History

Niihari Station opened on 25 September 1895 as a Nippon Railway station in present-day Chikusei, Ibaraki. The line was nationalised on 1 November 1906 and gained the Mito Line designation on 12 October 1909. Freight and parcel handling were discontinued in February 1984. Japanese National Railways was privatised on 1 April 1987 and the station passed to JR East. Suica IC-card service began on 18 November 2001. The Midori no Madoguchi reserved-ticket office closed on 16 March 2018, the station became unstaffed on 1 October 2020, and a new station building opened on 6 March 2021.

Notes

The station name comes from the ancient Niihari district government office (Niihari-no-gunga), whose ruins remain a designated archaeological site a short walk from the platforms.
