History
Shimauchi Station is on JR East's Ōito Line in the city of Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture, 2.6 kilometres from the Matsumoto terminus and numbered 40. It opened on 1 November 1915 as a station on the privately built Shinano Railway, handling both passengers and freight. The line was electrified in 1926 and nationalised in 1937. Freight handling ended in 1971, baggage handling in 1983, and simple consignment staffing was withdrawn entirely on 1 April 2000. With the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR East, and Suica acceptance began on 15 March 2025. It has a curved island platform; trains operate right-hand-running here, with platform-edge announcements warning of the gap.
