History

Kitanii-Matsumotodaigakumae Station opened on 2 October 1921 as Kitanii Station, a stop on the Tsukama Railway in what is now Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture. The operator's name changed in 1922, 1932, and finally to Alpico Kōtsū in April 2011. On 2 February 2002, with the opening of Matsumoto University nearby, the station was renamed to combine the original Kitanii placename with the university name at the request of the university and local residents. The resulting comma-bearing name is the longest in Nagano Prefecture. The single side platform sits 5.4 kilometres from the line's Matsumoto terminus.

Notes

The 2002 renaming produced the longest station name in Nagano Prefecture, deliberately combining the original Kitanii placename and the new Matsumoto University name to satisfy both local residents and the university.
