History
Hirata Station opened on 18 March 2007 as a JR East request station on the Shinonoi Line between Murai and Minami-Matsumoto stations. Planning began under Matsumoto's then-mayor Tadashi Aruga, with all 3.8 billion yen of construction costs covered by the City of Matsumoto. Construction began in September 2005 after national authorisation in February 2004. Hirata was incorporated into the Tokyo metropolitan tariff area in April 2014, gained Suica acceptance from 1 April 2017, and was assigned station number SN 04 in February 2025. The station is now operated under contract by Station Building MIDORI on behalf of Matsumoto Station.

Notes
A red arch over the ticket gate spelling "Hirata Station" in green letters with the JR East emblem was kept after the design was chosen in a public vote.
