History

Kami-Kumagaya Station opened on 1 April 1933 as Kamakura-machi Station and was renamed Kami-Kumagaya on 1 July of the same year. Operated by the private Chichibu Railway, the station sits on the single-track Chichibu Main Line in Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, 15.8 km from Hanyū. It also served the non-electrified Tobu Kumagaya Line, a 10.1 km branch to Menuma, until that line closed on 31 May 1983. The single island platform is wedged between the elevated Joetsu Shinkansen viaduct and the JR Takasaki Line tracks, and the abandoned Tobu Kumagaya Line rail remains alongside the now fenced-off rear face of the platform.

Notes

The disused track of the Tobu Kumagaya Line still lies alongside the fenced-off rear face of the platform, a vestige of the branch line that ran to Menuma until 1983.
