History

Kannonmachi Station opened on 11 March 1914 as a stop on the Kyoto Electric Light Company's Echizen Electric Railway. It became part of Keifuku Electric Railway's Echizen Main Line when that operator was formed on 2 March 1942. Freight handling ended on 1 September 1952 and station duties were outsourced in June 1961. Following the June 2001 Echizen Main Line collision and subsequent line-wide suspension, the facilities were transferred to Echizen Railway on 1 February 2003 and the station reopened on 20 July 2003 as part of the Katsuyama Eiheiji Line. A single side platform serves one track; staff are present only during weekday mornings and evenings.

Notes

The station name comes from the Kannon Hall at the nearby Sesshu-ji temple, which lent its name to the surrounding district.
