History
Matoba Station opened on 22 July 1940 on the Kawagoe Line, 4.8 km west of Kawagoe. The freight handling that came with the line was abolished on 16 March 1963, parcel-handling on 1 February 1984. JR East took over the stop at the 1 April 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways, and Suica acceptance began on 18 November 2001. The station retains its original wooden depot - the platforms reach it across a level pedestrian crossing within the premises. The roof was later extended and the platform slope added for accessibility. Matoba is now operated under contract by JR East Station Services under Kawagoe Station's management, with a simple Suica gate but no full automatic fare gates.

Notes
The Kawagoe Line's Matoba should not be confused with the nearby Tōbu Tōjō Line Kasumigaseki Station, which itself was called "Matoba" between 1916 and 1930.
