History

Nihombashi Station serves Chūō ward's Nihonbashi district in Tokyo, jointly operated by Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway across the Ginza, Tōzai, and Asakusa lines. The Tokyo Underground Railway opened the original station on 24 December 1932 as it extended the Ginza Line south to Kyōbashi; it passed to the Teito Rapid Transit Authority in 1941. Toei Line 1's Edobashi Station opened on 28 February 1963 with transfers permitted between operators, becoming a full interchange when the Tōzai Line platforms opened on 14 September 1967. Edobashi was renamed Nihombashi on 19 March 1989 to avoid confusion with Edogawabashi on the Yūrakuchō Line. The Ginza and Tōzai platforms passed to Tokyo Metro at the TRTA privatisation in 2004.

Notes

Departure melodies on the Tōzai Line platforms use the folk song "Oedo Nihonbashi" arranged by Minoru Mukaiya — chosen in 2015 to nod to the historic bridge above the station.
