History

Gakuen-mae Station opened on 14 October 1994 with the extension of the Sapporo Municipal Subway Tōhō Line from Hōsui-Susukino to Fukuzumi. The provisional name during construction was Toyohira. The name honours Hokkai Gakuen, the educational foundation that runs Hokkai-Gakuen University, Hokkai Commercial Science University and Hokkai High School, all in the immediate vicinity; exit 3 connects directly to Hokkai-Gakuen University. A fourth exit was added in 2006 when Hokkai Commercial Science University was completed, bringing the total to four exits. The station, beneath National Route 453 (Hiragishi-dōri), has a single island platform serving two tracks, divided between a north and a south concourse. Platform-edge gates began operating on 3 November 2016.
