History
Tōgane Station opened on 30 June 1900 as the terminus of the Bōsō Railway, making it one of the earlier stations to open in Japan; opposition from townspeople had forced the railway to halt initial construction at Ōami before pushing through to Tōgane. The Bōsō Railway was nationalised under the Railway Nationalisation Act on 1 September 1907, the Ōami–Tōgane section was separated as the Tōgane Line on 12 October 1909, and the line was extended to Naruto on 1 November 1911. The Kujūkuri Tramway (later Kujūkuri Railway) began running from Tōgane to Katakai on 25 November 1926, but this connection was abolished on 1 March 1961. The Tōgane Line was electrified on 28 September 1973, and freight handling ended on 1 December 1981. With the JNR breakup on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR East. Suica acceptance began on 18 November 2001, departure melodies were introduced in 2005, and the east exit opened on 14 March 2026.
