History

Higashi-Obama Station opened on 14 August 1953 between Shin-Hirano and Obama as a passenger-only stop on the Obama Line. Local residents had originally requested the station be named after the surrounding district of Onyū, but the kanji were judged difficult to read and the current name was adopted instead. Staffed-ticket duties were withdrawn in 1973 and the station became JR West property at privatisation on 1 April 1987. In 2001 the station was rebuilt as a joint structure shared with the Obama Municipal General Welfare Centre. In 2019 Fukui Prefecture announced a planned Hokuriku Shinkansen station immediately west of the existing facility, currently expected to open around 2046.

Notes

The 2002 Chubu Station 100 Selection listed Higashi-Obama for its combined function as a transit hub and municipal welfare centre.
