History
Kani Station opened on December 28, 1918 as Hiromi Station (広見駅), a stop on the privately operated Tōnō Railway in Gifu Prefecture. The station was renamed Kani Station on April 1, 1982, reflecting the consolidation of surrounding municipalities into the city of Kani. With the privatization of Japanese National Railways on April 1, 1987, the station came under Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central). The station now serves the Taita Line at a point 12.8 kilometers from the line's starting point at Tajimi, and has a Midori no Madoguchi staffed ticket office, unusual among smaller Taita Line stations.
