History

The station opened on 21 January 1926 as Kōnō Station on the Kakamigahara Railway, named for the prewar Gifu Agricultural High School nearby. It was suspended in 1944 during the war and reopened on 15 September 1946. Renamed Nōdai-mae on 1 December 1949 and Gifu Daigaku-mae on 1 October 1954 to reflect its position next to Gifu University's agriculture and engineering faculties, it kept that name for years after the university relocated. When the Kakamigahara civic park was completed on the former campus, the station took its current name on 9 July 1989. Tranpas was introduced on 14 March 2007 and manaca on 11 February 2011.

Notes

The station has been renamed three times in its history — from Kōnō to Nōdai-mae, then Gifu Daigaku-mae, and finally Shiminkōen-mae — each change reflecting the changing identity of the neighbouring land as Gifu University moved out and a public park took its place.
