History

Shimokuno Station serves the JR West Kisuki Line in Unnan, Shimane Prefecture, 31.5 kilometres from the line terminus at Shinji. It opened on 18 December 1932 when the line was extended from Kisuki to Izumo-Minari, and passed to JR West at the 1987 privatisation. Once an island platform with two tracks, the station now has a single side platform after the second track was removed; the former track-bed between the platform and station building is cultivated as a vegetable patch by the local Hanamomo Station resident-volunteer group, which has managed the station since 2008. In fiscal 2019 it averaged two passengers per day.

Notes

A local resident group, "Hanamomo Station", has tended the platform since 2008 and grows vegetables in the bed where the second track once ran.
